Rep loses daughter, 14, in Jigawa hostel fire

Dutse — Daughter of a member of the House of Representatives, Rukayya Adamu Hassan Abunabo, 14, of May Excellence Private School, located at Gabari Quarters in Hadejia Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has lost her life in a fire that destroyed the school hostel Saturday night.

According the state commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr Muhammad Gidado, who spoke to Vanguard on telephone, the inferno started at about 23.30pm Saturday night in one of the female hostels in school.

Gidado said it took the combined efforts of his officers and the state fire service to put out the fire.

He said: “It’s sad to inform you that a female student died in the inferno and the hostel was completely destroyed, with property worth millions of naira all destroyed in the inferno.”

Dr Gidado said the deceased, daughter of a member of the House of Representatives, was trapped in the hostel, adding that no other student or staff died or sustained injuries in the fire.

He also said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained and enjoined the general public to be more vigilant, in view of impending harmattan season.
