Former Nigeria international, Etim Esin has showered encomiums on the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio for giving the people of the state and Nigeria in general a befitting stadium that is of the highest quality.
Etim said, “Governor Akpabio has done well and I particularly thank him for his visionary leadership as the stadium will enhance the development of sports in the state and empower the youth.”
The Chile ’87 star however, frowned at the manner former sportsmen and women from the state were being ignored by those handling affairs in state. He pointed out that although the state has been blessed with a glut of talented sports personalities, they have been grossly ignored, even in matters concerning sports.
“We who have represented this state, and Nigeria could be incorporated into the system or recognised as sports ambassadors of the state,” Etim said,
Adding, “for instance, would it not have been proper for some of us to be involved in preparations for the commissioning ceremony of the newly built stadium in Uyo,?”
He noted that dignitaries from around the world, including Brazil soccer legend, Pele have been invited to the occasion. The he asked, “In as much as I am not against the invitation of Pele, why do we honour foreigners at the expense of our indigenous stars?”
