Coach says female boxers will make Nigeria proud at int’l championship

Lagos – Anthony Konyegwchi, the head Coach, Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), on Tuesday said the country’s representatives to the 2014 World Female Boxing Championship were ready to do the nation proud.

Konyegwchi made the assertion in an interview  in Lagos.

The coach, who spoke on the readiness of the boxers, said that the federation had made adequate provision for the competition.

NAN reports that the championship comes up in December in South Korea.

The coach disclosed that boxers were in open camp at the moment to hone their skills in line with the Armature International Boxing Association (AIBA) rules.

“The federation will by November assemble 20 boxers for a close camp from where 10 will be selected for the tournament.

“We are putting everything in place to ensure the best of the boxers emerged as the country’s representatives,” Konyegwchi said.

According to him, the federation has not yet made public the list of invited boxers but the athletes are trying on their daily routine training to make the list.

He added that there had been speculations making the rounds that the federation was going to conduct trials for the event.

“The rumour is a healthy one for it spurs them into taking their regular sessions seriously, though there has been no official statement on any trial,” he said.
