Ijaw youths threaten oil firm over gas flaring

By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN— IJAW youths in Gelegele community of Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State have threatened to shut down the operations of Dubril Oil operating in the area, if the Federal and state governments failed to stop the gas flaring, which has allegedly led to deaths of some members of the community.

The community had persistently accused the management of the oil company of not doing enough to stop gas flaring in the area.

However, an official of the company, who does not want his name in print, absolved the company of any blame, saying “we do not have any problem with Gelegele community. What they are talking about has nothing to do with us.”

Mr. Joseph Gbale, who spoke for the community said: “The state and Federal governments should prevail on Dubril Oil to relocate the flaring of gas from the heart of Gelegele community because our people are dying every day.”
