Afikpo — Four women in Afikpo North Council Area of Ebonyi State have lost their lives in a boat mishap.
Secretary to Oziza Traditional Council of Elders in Afikpo, Chief Okpani Egwu, who confirmed the incident, said: “It happened at the weekend, I mean on Saturday,” warning those who don’t know how to swim not to go near the river.
It was learnt that the deceased and four other women, who went to a farm across the river in neighbouring Cross River State, were returning to Afikpo when their boat capsized in Oziza River, following a windstorm.
However, an eyewitness said the four other women were rescued by fishermen, who were in the river when the incident happened.
The source, who craved anonymity, further said one of the four persons that died was rescued but died on the way to hospital.
According to him, only two corpses were recovered as at Sunday evening.
Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of Afikpo North council area, Mr. Emmanuel Irem, described the incident as tragic, appealing to operators of speed boats in Ebonyi and Cross River states to always avoid over-loading and speeding.
It was gathered that the search for the remaining corpses in the river continued yesterday.
