KANO – Kano House of Assembly has passed a bill recommending life imprisonment for convicted Rapist in the state.
Similarly, randy lecturers and employers of labour risked 14 years imprisonment on conviction of Sexual harassment.
The private initiative sponsored by the House Deputy majority leader, Yusuf Babangida Suleiman (Gwale) was unanimously adopted Wednesday after it was read thrice at the chamber.
The bill also recommended rapist upon conviction to pay a fine of N 200. 000 , in addition to compensation to victims.
The proposed law further recommended that any randy lecturers or employers of labour convicted of sexual harassment apart from been liable to fine of N 50. 000 would in addition compensate the victim.
The bill which has been forwarded to Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for assent was brought about by inadequacies of the penal code.
Shedding more light on the bill, Babangina Sleat revealed that the bill was designed to check the rising cases of rape across the state, stressing that convict risk a minimum of 14years or life sentence.
Sultima lamented that ‘it is disheartening and totally unacceptable for octogenarian to rape minor without corresponding punishment”.
The Deputy majority leader revealed that “the House was compelled to take hard stand to curtail and check rampant cases of rape that unfortunately has been on the increase in recent years”.
Babangida stated that ” we have done our best to discourage the beast in human and anyone who tries his luck would pay handsomely for his mistake”
