Police arrest child trafficking syndicate members in Enugu

ENUGU—The Enugu State Police command, yesterday, arrested members of an alleged child trafficking syndicate who sold a three-month-old baby girl to a childless couple at N430,000.

The police said the 22-year-old mother of the child identified as one Chinelo Ituma from Mgbo, in Ebonyi State but residing at New Artisan Market Enugu had earlier sold her baby which she got out of wedlock to one Maria Asomba from Ubahu Okija in Anambra State for N150,000 when she could not take care of the baby.

The State Police Spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu who confirmed the arrest of the alleged child traffickers, said that  Asomba who bought the baby from the mother, resold her to one Esther Obi a native of Nise in Awka South but residing at Woliwo area of Onitsha.

He said that Esther had earlier collected N430,000 from one Nkechi Uzochukwu from Ezsegbogu Aboh Mbaise in Imo State with a promise to deliver a baby to her.

Esther was said to have bought the baby from her mother at N150,000 and resold her to the desperate buyer, Nkechi Uzochukwu at N430,000.  Uzochukwu had been married for about 10 years without any child and decided to buy one apparently to overcome the long agony of childlessness which was said to have threatened her marriage.

But the secret deal was said to have been blown open when the neighbours of the young mother of the baby (Chinelo Ituma) reportedly raised an alarm over the disappearance of the baby and reported the matter to the police.

Amaraizu, who said that operatives of the command have already commenced investigations into the activities of the  syndicate, said that Chinelo had confessed that she sold her child because as a single mother who had no job, she could not effectively cater for her.
