NATIONAL Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, yesterday banned locally made boats above 10 years old from operating on the nation’s inland waterways.
Announcing the ban in Lagos at a seminar on “Safety and Awareness Campaign,” NIWA’s Managing Director, Inna Ciroma, said it was one of the measures being introduced by her management to curb increasing cases of boat mishaps on the nation’s waterways.
According to her, “other measures are; operators and passengers must wear life jacket before boarding a boat, canoe or ferry; all boat operators should avoid carrying excess passengers; only trained and certified captains should operate ferries and boat and that standard regulations allow boats/ferries to move from 6am to 6pm.
“Others include, ban on consumption of alcohol before and during boat ride, all passengers and the captains must be safety-conscious and alert; boat operators should avoid over speeding and others.”
