The role of Small Medium Enterprises, SMEs, as catalyst for economic growth and development has been well documented in the economy, and recognised in most countries.

For example, in most of the newly industrialized countries, more than 70 per cent of all the industrial enterprises belong to the SMEs, in which Nigeria is not exceptional.

Thus, the recent issuance of the International Standard Organisation, ISO certification to Ammasco International Limited, producers of  Amalube HD50, Engen super 20w/50, among others  has no doubt raised the profile of the company, and would definitely move others to improve on their lube, industry operators say.

The certification according to the operators will not only encourage growth in the industry, but will  stir competition amongst producers,  as competing brands will endeavour to upgrade their quality to attain the feat achieved by Ammasco.

The presentation of the NIS ISO 9001:2008 by the Director General of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Joseph Odumodu affirmed the leading role of  the  company in the West Africa sub-region,  this he said has  secured it a place among the league of quality management system compliant companies in Nigeria and beyond.

This standard will afford the company’s product the leeway to sell  in any part of the world. The new status of the company came after a tour of the company’s facility in Kano by SON officials.

Speaking, SON DG said, “by this achievement, this company has joined the lofty class of Quality Management System certified companies in Nigeria.

This is a giant stride in the pursuit of excellence to provide quality services to clients and is worthy of commendation and emulation by well meaning business community. On this note, I join other Nigerians to congratulate you on this your milestone achievement.”

The SON boss further noted that any company aspiring to gain a respectable position in the market place will have to work hard to satisfy its customers’ immediate needs and as well be ready to break more grounds, adding that, “the ever changing needs and requirements in the provision of quality products and services have made it mandatory for organizations to establish and implement a robust management frame that guaranties effective performance and improvement in terms of customer satisfaction and profit.”

Odumodu reminded the company that success is a journey and not a destination. The new status should serve as a driving force as the company strives towards sustainable progress.

The journey to excellence according to Odumodu “does not have an end because quality is moving target as it is defined by the ever-changing needs of the customer. Our challenge to you today is to keep the system healthy and up to date in order to reap the benefits of the Quality Management System approach to management.

This system having been certified has been placed on six-month surveillance audits to ensure continuing suitability and effectiveness of the implementation of quality management system.”

He added, “the surest way to maintain relevance remain competitive and gain more market share in the global market; and more importantly, guaranteeing customer satisfaction must be through provision of acceptable products, thus making the NIS ISO 9001:2008 standard key for achieving success in business.

Achieving the ISO System Certification is a demonstration of conformity of Management System to internationally acceptable standard requirements and the ability of the company to get it right the first time.”

In his remarks, the Board chairman of the company, Alhaji Mustapha Ado Mohammed, revealed that Ammasco International Limited in its five years in operation has achieved impressive results both in terms of sales and quality of goods and service delivery.
