PORT HARCOURT—A group, Third Force Movement, has expressed worry over the delay in conducting a re-run election to fill the vacant seat of late Mr Tonye Harry who represented Degema constituency in Rivers State House of Assembly before he passed on in October last year.
A statement by Secretary of the group, Mr. Oprite Amachree, said it was disturbing that several months after the untimely death of the former lawmaker, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was yet to conduct a re-run election for the constituency, noting that the action was robbing the area of representation in the state House of Assembly.
According to the group, the late Harry, who was also a former Speaker of the House of Assembly, died in October last year, adding that the delay in holding a re-run election violated the Electoral Act.
Meantime, the body also called on the national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to overhaul the executive structure of the party from the state to the ward level. According to the group, the court judgment that brought in Mr. Felix Obuah and Mr. Walter Idibia as Chairman and Secretary respectively, left other executive structures of the party in the state non-functional.
