Policeman sustains spinal cord injury in clash with MASSOB

ABAKALIKI — Weekend’s bloody clash between men of Ebonyi State Police Command and members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, last left one of the policeman (names withheld) with a spinal cord injury.

Confirming the development, state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Chris Anyanwu, asserted that it was members of MASSOB who attacked the police officers at Iboko in Izzi Local Government Area while they (police) were carrying out their legitimate duty.

”They were the ones who attacked the police. Two of our men were wounded and are being treated at state police clinic, while one who sustained spinal cord injury was taken to either University Teaching Hospital, Enugu or Orthopaedic hospital in Enugu. Two suspects were arrested and are still in detention,” the PPRO said.

Vanguard gathered that the youths, who were allegedly accused by the police of training criminals in the area, attacked the policemen and beat them mercilessly as both parties sustained various degrees of injuries.

It was learnt that a policeman was left with a bloodied mouth, while another one in mufti had his leg broken during the fracas with the youths.

A father of one of the youths simply identified as Nwofoke, told Vanguard that his son was not a criminal but a member of MASSOB.

”My son is not a criminal, all I know is that my son is always involved in MASSOB activities and is a serious member of the group.

“I gave him money to go and deposit for me in the bank on the day of the clash and he told me he was going to hospital to see his friend who was ill. It was on the way to the hospital that police accosted him,” he said.

It should be recalled that the police at Iboko had been trailing the youths in the area over alleged activities of training criminals.
