BENIN—AHEAD of Wednesday’s registration exercise of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State, there is uneasy calm between Governor Adams Oshiomhole and some leaders of the party, led by former governor of the state, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, after the leaders complained of being shut out in the exercise.
Indication of the crisis emerged last week, at a leadership meeting where the governor announced the names of three persons selected from the state, who will work with the two national officers to conduct the exercise in the state.
Former South-South Vice Chairman of the party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who is one of those eyeing the Osadebey Avenue after Oshiomhole, faulted the nomination of Godwin Adenomo as the member representing Edo South district in the committee.
His argument was countered by majority of the leaders, including the deputy governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, and the nomination of Adenomo was accepted by the leaders.
But there was a twist on Sunday between the leaders and the members, who came from Abuja to conduct the registration exercise, when Chief Oyegun complained that they were not involved in the nomination of those to carry out the exercise in the state.
It was learnt that Oshiomhole, who was shocked by Oyegun’s outburst, reminded him that same issue was raised at a previous meeting and was settled amicably. The governor wondered why the former governor decided to raise same issue at the meeting. Vanguard learnt that the governor expressed disappointment and insisted that the list will not be tampered with.
When contacted, the Political Adviser to the Governor and Leader of Edo Solidarity Movement, said: “Anyone who wants to steal the structure of the party from the governor is wasting his time because it will not work. They said they want the Binis to speak with one voice. Is politics Igue festival? Some of us decided to shun the meeting called by Chief Oyegun last time because we knew that those behind the meeting were not sincere. As leader of ESM, I cannot allow any body to take the governor for granted. That is what is happening and we will not allow it.”
