Lagos – Seventy-two shooters on Wednesday began to vie for honours at the maiden Late Maj. Joseph Ogundele-Ojo Memorial National Shooting Championships.

The event is being sponsored by the President, Nigeria Shooting Federation (NSF), Wole Madariola, to honour the federation’s long-time national trainer.

Madariola said it was important to stage the event because Ogundele-Ojo was a hero of the sport who contributed immensely to the discovery of champions.

The timing of the event, he said, was crucial as it would be used to select shooters for an international competition coming up in Egypt in February.

“We have to begin preparation for the Egypt competition and because we are interested in professionalism, we need to know our shooters and their capabilities.

“We have employed strict measures for our selections and there will be no sentiments, especially in selecting our final team.

“We will also have another event in January for the shooters to garner enough points to be in our final selection,’’ Madariola said.

NAN reports that shooters from Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers and Delta and the Nigeria Police Force team are in the competition.

The shooting teams from other armed forces are still being expected.

The participants will compete in pistol, rifle, male and female/individual and team events.

The event is holding at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Yaba, Lagos from Dec. 18 to Dec. 20. (NAN)
