The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson while inaugurating new board of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Tuesday, in Abuja urged members to quickly identify how best indigenous IT companies can grow.
With Dr. Tosin Ajayi as the chairman, other members og the board will include , Sen. Musa Bello, Alhaji Saidu Gwadabe, Hon. Ben Bako, Engr. Wilson Chinedu, Mr. Harami Balami, Barrister Segun Ilorin, Haj. Sa’adatu Ayitogo, and Mr. Emmanuel Ighomena
Others members of the board will also include representatives of the Ministries of Science and Technology, Communication Technology and Education, Standards Organization of Nigeria, Nigeria Society of Engineers, CPN, ASUU, ASUP and the Director General of NITDA.
Earlier in her opening remarks, the Minister urged members of the Board to work with NITDA and come up with strategies on how best to achieve the objectives for which the Agency was established
“ICT is the heart of global economies and Nigeria is no different. We are committed to leveraging on the tools of ICT for the socio economic development of this country and the inauguration of this Board today is a quantum leap in that direction”, she said.
She decried the very low inclusion of women in ICT noting that only one female member was on the Board.
In his response, chairman of the Board, Dr. Tosin Ajayi while reiterating the importance of ICT in global development said that, “ICT is a tool that will completely change the world, adding that the Ministry of Communications Technology is the most important ministry in the country because without a knowledge-based economy, we will be retrogressive”.
Ajayi stated that, “IT is the most important tool ever created by mankind and together with the able Management of NITDA, we will leave no stone unturned in exploiting the benefits of IT for the greater good of the country”.
Meanwhile, the Acting Director General of NITDA, Dr. Ashiru Sani Daura while welcoming the team on board assured them of the Agency’s full support in taking the IT industry to greater heights.
It would be recalled that Dr. Tosin Ajayi led Board is the second to be constituted for NITDA, the first one having being dissolved by a presidential directive after serving for two years.
