Anambra State has won the gold and silver medals in the high jump event for Primary School at the ongoing Sterling Bank-sponsored 6th National School Sports Festival taking place in Ilorin.
While Bassey Chinazor, the reigning champion in the category retained his title as compatriots Ekene Elias clinched the silver medal in the same category.
Speaking after the feat, High jump coach of the state Osita Okagwu expressed satisfaction, saying that it was expected.
“I feel so happy because I had expected Chinaza to win he has done it before he is doing it again. Of course I have confidence in the boy and there was no threat whatsoever. He won it last year in the primary school games he won it there and this time around he said he was going to win it again and he did.
He called on the state government to increase the scholarship he is enjoying at the moment.
“He has scholarship to the University level but I will expect them to increase it so that he can study more”.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Gymnastic Team dominated the event after clinching 13 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze medals to increase the state’s medal hall.
Also in Swimming, the Lagos team added 4 gold medals bringing the total number of gold medal to five among the already decided events in swimming.
More successes were recorded in the Taekwondo event with three gold medals won in different categories.
Reacting to the success so far at the festival, the Director of Sports, LagosState, Kweku Tandoh disclosed that the effort of the Governor Babatunde Fashola in Grassroots Sports Development in the State is yielding the desired result.
He said this is evident in the concentration and presentation of younger athletes from the primary schools to represent the State in Ilorin
as he added that Lagos State Government will not relent in its efforts to invest in grass roots sports development.
Meanwhile, the state also won a gold medal in the U-15 basketball event for secondary schools.
