BENIN CITY — AHEAD the October 22, 2013, rescheduled council election in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State and some wards in Uhunmwode, two councillorship aspirants of former All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, have petitioned the Interim National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Chief Bisi Akande.
They accused the leadership of APC in the state of alleged imposition of former Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, members as candidates for the councillorship election in Isi-South ward 8 and ward 5 Esan North East council.
The aspirants, Andrew Ogbeide and Ituah Emmanuel, wondered why it was only the names of former ACN aspirants that were sent to Edo State Independent National Electoral Commission, EDSIEC, as candidates of APC, when the party was yet to conduct primaries for all the aspirants, following the merger of ACN, ANPP and Congress for Progressive Change, CPC.
“It is on this note that we appeal to the Interim Chairman, members of the National Executive Committee of APC and other leaders of the party to prevail on leaders of APC in Edo State to conduct primaries to elect the councillorship candidates that will represent the party in the by-election in Isi-South ward 8 and ward 5 in Uhunmwonde and Esan North East respectively.
“Now that we are all APC members, it is only rational and fair that in consonance with Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, regulations that a proper primaries were conducted amongst the three aspirants, who have now formed APC. We appeal to EDSIEC to reject the names submitted and insist on primaries to avoid legal contest.”
