SPECIAL Adviser to the President on Inter Party Affairs, Senator Ben Obi, has expressed regret that various candidates in the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State failed to adhere to the zoning arrangement put forward by the state governor, Mr Peter Obi.
He said adherence to zoning would not only have reduced the current political tension in the state but also created an understanding among the various stakeholders in the politics of the state.
The presidential aide, who expressed worry over the development, reasoned that there was nothing good in politics than for key players to shift ground on certain issues, saying such was necessary for rapid socio-economic development of any society.
He spoke in Abuja, at a colloquium organized for candidates of the forth coming governorship election, by two groups under the aegis of Anambra State Towns People Association, ASTPA, and Anambra State Public Officers and Elders Forum, ASPOF.
“Although the issue of zoning in the coming governorship election in Anambra is belated as the various candidates are already in the ring but I wish they had reasoned with the state governor’s advice for zoning of the governorship seat,” he stressed.
Obi assured that the Federal Government would support efforts to ensure credible polls. “You recall that the candidates that emerged from Edo and Ondo states were all opposition candidates. Adams Oshiomhole of EdoState and Olusegun Mimiko, from OndoState emerged from the opposition and after their victories, the first congratulatory messages for them were all from Mr President.
“As far as this administration is concerned, we are committed to conducting credible elections at all levels in this country. That is why on the 21st of October we are going to organise a sensitisation worksho. The candidates have been involved, the parties have been involved for this sensitization exercise,” he stressed.
Obi, who insisted that the candidates must engage in politics of issues, added that they must have the mindset of coming to government to surpass Governor Peter Obi in terms of good governance after emergence at the poll just as he noted that AnambraState has the greatest entrepreneur in the southern region of the country.
“We have to engage in politics of issues, we have to engage in politics of understanding, selfless service. Anambra is a state that produces the greatest entrepreneurs in this sub region of the country. We are not expecting anything less than what Mr Peter Obi has done. Anybody that comes up after Mr Peter Obi has to do double what he has done.”
