All Progressives Congress, national leader, and ex-governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, his successor, Governor Babatunde Fashola and his counterpart from Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, yesterday described 75-year-old activist, Baba Oluwide Omojola, as a man whose activism and leadership qualities helped in the political emancipation of the country.
They spoke at the 75th birthday/lecture in Lagos, organized for the activist, with the theme An overview of the progressive movement in Africa.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Nkem Oyekpe, from University of Lagos, UNILAG.
The event was also attended by the former General Secretary, Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Chief Frank Kokori, (Chairman of the occasion), leader of Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Publicity Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, Chief Ayo Opadokun, among others.
Omojola fought for the masses
Speaking, Asiwaju Tinubu, who was represented by Professor Adebayo Williams, described Omojola as a Nigerian who participated in several protests to demand for better standard of living for the masses and to ensure that the right of the citizens were not violated.
He said: “For me, in order to ensure that while still alive, his legacy can be inculcated into everyone, I have concluded plans to establish a foundation in his honour. And it would be named ‘Baba Omojola Foundation’. The foundation will help inculcate the idea of selfless service in Nigerians.”
He fought for democracy—Fashola
On his part, Fashol, a represented by his Special Adviser on Political, Power and Legislative Bureau, Mr. Taofeeq Folami, said: “He is a lofty man. He is an activist who fought for the democracy that we are all enjoying today. The best legacy I believe is the legacy that the representative of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has suggested that we should have a foundation for him. That, I believe, is a legacy that will linger his performance while on earth.”
Similarly, Opadokun said Omojola was an excellent leader who served the country with his activism, saying, “he is a man who wants the best for the people. I have not seen a good number of people with such carriage in the country. This is a man that will sell his personal property to fund protests to demand for the rights of the citizens. He is broad minded. He is a dogged fighter. What you have contributed to the country will remain a lasting legacy. You have added value to the country.”
Speaking, Chief Kokori, the former General Secretary of NUPENG said “this is one of those frontrunners in the struggle for the democracy that we are enjoying today.”
And he isn’t in the caliber of many who present false claim about their role in the struggle for democracy in the country.”
Different from today’s leaders -Adebanjo
Adebanjo explained that “Although, not many Nigerians will appreciate him because he isn’t some of the fake leaders who are milking the country and claiming to be progressive and patriotic, but who are the spoilers of this country. This man, Omojola is different from all the leaders in the country. Today, anyone who has money to throw into politics and become a governor, will simply refer him or herself as a leader. Then people begin to worship him. All the antecedent of such leaders, Nigerians don’t care to know.”
