Former Athletics Federation of Nigeria president, Dan Ngerem has declared that it was time Nigerian sports authority end their rhetoric and help the country’s athletes to maximise their potentials and achieve success at the world level.
Ngerem was speaking against the background of the chequered perform-ances by Nigerian athletes at the world stage. He submitted that the different between Nigerian and other nations’ athletes was the adequate funding and training programmes that produced world cham-pions.
“We would be only going around in circles if we fail to do what we are suppose to do. First of all we must have a clear policy and adequate funding of those programmes.
“For instance an athlete like Blessing Okagbare has all the potential to become a world champion. But how have we helped her to get the desire results,” said Mr. Ngerem
He stated that poor showing of Nigerian at the 2013 World Champion-ships shouldn’t be a surprise. This was because the athletes were not prepared for the event.
“The Sports Minister is there in Moscow celebrating a silver medal that came through cheer luck. After the CrossRiver/ All Nigeria Champion-ships, the AFN was looking for funds to camp the athletes and there wasn’t any camping of the athletes.
That would have even afforded them the opportunity to practice for the relays where we have prospects. “Now Okagbare wins a silver we are celebrating it. Why can’t the government put in money for the preparations of these athletes, so that there will be many more athletes to celebrate.”
