ONITSHA — A governorship aspirant on the platform of Peoples Party of Nigeria, PPN, Chief Basil Iwuoba, has called on the Senate to reverse itself on the issue of local government autonomy for the growth of democracy in the country.
Addressing newsmen in his campaign office, Iwuoba said the decision of the Senate to vote against LG autonomy was not only against the tenets of democracy but a also total neglect and disrespect to the majority voice of Nigerians who clamoured for it.
” It is very unfortunate that our senators who are grounded in legislative process should refuse to vote in favour of the local government autonomy that had been clamoured for the past years.
“It is greed that made the senators to vote against it because some of them want to be governors in their respective states so that they would be embezzling local government funds.”
He said the local government system, as a third tier of government guaranteed by the 1999 constitution as amended, played a major role in providing good governance for the people in the rural areas.
Iwuoba said he was in the governorship race to provide good governance for the people of Anambra state, assuring that if elected, he would tackle the issue of security headlong to make sure that kidnapping, armed robbery and other forms to heinous crimes were a thing of the past in the place.
He said he would improve on what past governors had done, adding that his administration would within six months in office conduct local government election should the Peter Obi government failed to do so this year.
He called on politicians and the people of Anambra to de- emphasize money politics on ground that it only promoted mediocrity in choosing who governs the state.
