THE dream of universal health insurance may not be attainable in Nigeria except major factors militating against its attainment, such as the low level awareness, poor education, inadequate information and lack of modern technology are addressed.
The MD/CEO, Avon Healthcare Ltd, Mrs. Simbo Ukiri, who disclosed this in Lagos, during the media presentation of Avon Health Maintenance Organisation, argued for engagement of all stakeholders within the health insurance industry in the country.
Ukiri, who noted that Avon, a Health Maintenance Organisation, HMO, was prepared to storm the Nigerian health scene by setting new standards through real value to clients, enrollees, providers and in service delivery, reiterated its goal to be the preferred choice for managed healthcare solutions in the nation.
“One issue that we have identified within the Nigerian health system is the lack of information and awareness about health insurance. We believe that the benefits of health insurance and being part of a health insurance scheme, is one that most Nigerians do not know about.
“We share the NHIS passion under leadership of Dr. Abdulahman Sambo, for Nigeria to achieve universal health insurance coverage. Working to gether with all stakeholders, we believe this is possible sooner rather than later,” she remarked.
Ukiri avowed that one of the first things to be done to resolve the problem, is to be part of the wave that educates Nigerians and bring awareness that health insurance exists, works and delivers as promised.
“It is to let Nigerians know that health insurance has real, measurable benefits for every body and everyone should subscribe to it.
Speaking on the Avon Cover, being officially launched this week in Lagos, she said: “There are a variety of plans for every part of the Nigerian society, but we don’t simply sell health plans.
“People should imagine quality of health care that is seamless and accessible with ease and convenience. It is one that assures you that your health plans are going to be met based on the health plan you have chosen from our portfolio of offerings.”
