The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC is to boost turnout of voters in elections in the state through the creation of more wards and polling units.
LASIEC chairman, Justice Afolabi Adeyinka, (rtd.) disclosed this during an interactive forum on the delineation of wards and creation of additional polling units in Ajeromi Ifelodun local government area of the state.
Justice Adeyinka said the creation of more polling units would be achieved in the course of the delineation of wards and constituencies, adding that the decision to carry out the exercise was borne out of the realisation that Lagos State is under represented in the number of electoral constituencies, wards and polling units compared to other states in the country.
The chairman noted that in creating more polling units, LASIEC would also arrest the low turnout of the eligible voters at Local Government Council Elections in Lagos state.
He said, “there will be more representation by the people in the democratic process as there would be room for more councilors who would represent their respective wards in the councils.”
“The additional polling units will bring polling units closer to the people and will go a long way in reducing the apparent low turn out of eligible voters at local government council elections which a large number of the residents of the state have shown towards the electoral process.”
