Jailbreak: Security beefed up in Abia prisons

UMUAHIA— FOLLOWING increasing cases of jailbreak in parts of the country, Mrs. Ukwuori Ndukwe-Kalu, the Abia State Comptroller of Prisons, said weekend, that security has been beefed up around prisons in the state to checkmate such occurrences.

According to the comptroller, the prison authorities were collaborating with security agencies to ensure that tight security was maintained around  prison yards in the state.

Ndukwe-Kalu spoke when members of the Assemblies of God Church, Item Street, Umuahia, visited inmates of Umuahia Prisons.

She said: “We want to take proactive measures, and other security agencies are synergizing with us.”

The comptroller warned against any suspicious movements around prison formations in the state.

Ndukwe -Kalu commended the church for remembering the inmates, and further solicited more partnership with the church in reforming the inmates as well as catering for their welfare.

In his remarks, the Senior Minister of the Church, the Rev. Dr. Theophilus Anyimson, explained that the visit was part of the evangelistic outreach of the church to spread the gospel to the inmates.

Aynimson said that the church was concerned with the plights of inmates and would want to complement government’s efforts to reform them.

“We felt that it is necessary that we do not just stay in the church but need to do the mandate that Jesus gave to us by reaching out even to the inmates, and be part of solution to their needs both spiritual and physical”, Anyimson said.

He said that the prison inmates are still part of the society, and need to be cared for as Jesus is interested in the soul of all irrespective of their status or offenses.

“We will feed them with the word of God and also physical food to ensure that their souls are not starved so that they can leave here a better people”, the cleric noted.

He also commended the efforts of the government in making the condition of prison inmates better, and promised continued partnership of the church to ensure proper reformation and
