Staco Insurance plc has taken on as the official insurer of MTN Lagos Street Soccer Championship Season six even as the underwriter has thrown its weight behind the tournament.
The insurer had provided cover to the Season five of the football tournament last year while it will also be providing group personal accident insurance cover to all the footballers and officials during the competition which kicks off on August 18.
The company’s Managing Director, Sakiru Oyefeso, stated that Staco will always be a part of such a tourney especially as the company is always poised to give back to the community where it is generating its income from.
He noted that the insurance company agreed to provide insurance cover to the tournament taking into consideration that the yearly competition is designed to ensure grassroots sports development, as well as youth empowerment.
MTN Lagos Street Soccer, an initiative of the Lagos State Government, with the support of MTN, was conceived to discover raw football talents that abound on the streets of Lagos, polish and put them on a global platform to compete for recognition and success.
As a socially responsible corporate citizen, he pointed out that Staco will always want to be associated with projects that can add value to the lives of the populace in the country as this is in line with the company’s determination to make its impacts felt in its area of operations.
He emphasised that Staco is involved in every area of the economy where there is a need but the main focus of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are in the areas of education, sports and security.
Oyefeso stressed that the company is dedicated to sports because there is a common belief that recreation is important to the development of the human body and therefore, the need to support sport development becomes paramount to the company’s CSR strategy.
Staco has been involved in various sporting activities, amongst which includes the Awka-Ibom Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament, Ikoyi Club 1938 Team Tennis Tournament and various support given on international and local football competitions that were held in Nigeria.
Oyefeso maintained that the notion of CSR is central to the activities of the company and that this explains why social responsibility is one of the company’s core values.
He said “To us, CSR simply means doing well by doing good. Since the business world of today is complex and dynamic with lots of issues emerging as conflicting interest, being responsible means that corporations are more than just economic institutions, they should take up the responsibility of helping the society solve some of the most pressing social problems, many of which these corporations helped to cause.”
