The Federal Government has urged researchers at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Researcher, NIMR, to intensify efforts to reduce diseases and disaster burden in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, succour is on the way of Nigerian women, as scientists at NIMR are to conduct a National Survey on the prevalence of Human Papilloma Virus, HPV, following the procurement of CBAS 4800 machine used for the screening of HPV, the virus that is known to cause cancer of the cervix.
NIMR is the first and only institute that has acquired the machine in the whole of West African Sub- region.
The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, who spoke during the official commissioning of the new Human Virology Laboratory, HVL, at the institute to mark the Director-General, Prof. Innocent Ujah’s three years in office in Lagos, said the new laboratory and machine would provide care not only for cervical cancer patients but Nigerians living with HIV and Tuberculosis, (TB).
According to Pate, the upgrading of biological safety level three laboratory for Multi- Drug Resistant TB, MDR-TB, by the Family health International, (FHI360) with support from USAID would tell which type of virus is involved as well as improve quality of care.
