Driver in court for allegedly causing death by dangerous driving

The Police on Monday arraigned a 41-year-old driver, Salihu Mohammed, of no fixed address, in an Abuja Magistrates’ court for alleged dangerous driving and causing death.

The police prosecutor, Insp. Jeremiah Elijah told the court that the crime was committed on June 21, along the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Way, when the accused person drove his vehicle in a very dangerous manner which resulted in an accident.

“The accused person drove recklessly and in a very dangerous manner and eventually knocked down a middle-aged woman identified as Hassana Ziladiami.’’

Elijah said the deceased sustained serious injuries which resulted in her death later that same day.

He said the offence contravened the provision of Section 27 CAP 548 of the Road Traffic Act.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against him.

The Chief Magistrate, Usman Shuaibu, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 and a reliable surety in like sum.

Shuaibu, said the surety must be a civil servant on not less than Grade Level 8 and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

He adjourned the matter to August 13 for further hearing. (NAN)
