Are Smartphones really taking the place of Laptops?

With the rising penetration of smartphones, there is this belief that laptops and personal computer, PCs, are threatened. This is mainly because the mobile phone, especially the smart phone genre, can be used for virtually everything a laptop can be used for.

A lot of users today have resorted to their smartphones for activities like checking and sending of emails, typing of documents, accessing social sites among others.

However, in our recent reach out to several users of both devices; it seems none may actually push the other out of the system, after all.


If you ask Mr. Oluwasegun Lawani, a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, he will always tell you that he prefers, Laptops to Mobile phones. His reason is that laptops can be used for developing some money fetching apps which cannot be done using mobile phones.

Mr. Adebayo Ojo also prefers laptops. He believes that laptops can do more things than mobile phones. “Laptops have higher memory space and  there are some applications or sites that cannot be opened on the mobile phones but on laptops.

“Besides, laptops can work on so many software applications that mobile phones can not be compatible with. What with a wide variety of downloads with fast internet facility one can get with the help of modems on laptops” he averred.

But Miss Cassandra Onyia a student of Ajayi Crowther University, prefers Mobile phones to Laptops. For her, the mobile phone is light and easy to carry about. It can also be used anywhere for those purposes one can use laptop for, without much need for charging.

“With mobile phones, one can make calls on the go, even as he or she can also do online works that laptop can do”.

Miss Onyia is however not alone. Another student, Miss Titilope Oyegoke also prefers mobile phones to laptops. She explained that mobile phones have portability that is; it is easy to carry about without it been noticed. She also said that there are some applications that can be stored in a mobile phone that cannot be stored in a laptop.

Mobile phone uses a sim card while laptops don’t. She claims that both devices can be used accessing the internet’s and can also be used to take photographs and can also be used for video chatting. Both devices can be used for banking transaction for example mobile banking.

Mr. Damilare Oyeyebi prefers laptops to mobile phones because in relation to his work, he uses his laptop to carry out researches and analysis date which cannot be done on any mobile phone. He claims that his laptop is like his robot.
