By Favour Nnabugwu

For the country to have its desired road infrastructure that would place the nation among the top 20 nations in the world, Nigeria needs N2.3trillion, says  Minister of works,  Mike Onolememen.

Onolememen said the value of N2.3trillion was arrived at based on statistical analysis during an audience with the representative of the United Nations Secretary General on International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction in his office last week.

The Minister stated that the Ministry in its capacity cannot allow such huge investment on road infrastructure built by different tenures of government in the nation to be washed away by disaster such as flood, and said that such natural occurrences can be mitigated.

He assured that the Ministry will work closely with any available expertise to formulate the way forward in protecting the nation’s key infrastructure in his domain.  He however mentioned that the Ministry is ready to further collaborate with National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA in resolving the occurrences of this national question.

The minister revealed that there is no sustainable development in any nation without sustainable infrastructure. He therefore requested for a forum of nations with different disaster experiences where thinkers will come together to discuss on how to avert natural disaster/disaster risk reduction.

Earlier in her address, the leader of the group, Margareta Wahlstrom stated that the group came to re-inforce the message on natural disaster management.

She said it is a global agenda where people from different parts of the world with similar disaster risk experiences for example, Canada, Japan, Australia  and others could discuss and make contributions to help nations prone to natural disasters just like what was witnessed in Nigeria during last year rainy season which she said could have been averted.
