Police moved into Obio Akpor to save property – Police boss

RIVERS State Police Commissioner, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu has said the police would only vacate Obio Akpor local government secretariat when it was sure that there would be no threat to the council properties.

The Commissioner who spoke yesterday at the Police headquarters said the Police had to seal off the secretariat when it got wind of plan by some hoodlums to bomb the place.

“We are a law enforcement agency, the key law enforcement agency. Sometimes I get information and my DPO may not get the information, my Area Commander may not get it. I have more sources, the IG has more sources than myself, the AIG in the zone has more sources and if there’s a plan to bomb Obio/Akpor local government headquarters and we are informed, are we to sit down tight and watch it happen? No, we will move down there just to make sure that we take custody of the place and that’s all”

The Police boss said it was not true that he withdrew the Police orderly attached to Okrika local government Chairman and those at the local government secretariat, adding that the Police was not an interested party in the political crisis rocking the state.

“I am a career officer and I am not here to dance to the tune of anybody, you are aware of the changes that have happened in this state since I took over, my posting here is purely a professional posting. I have worked with you and you always carry my stories, I am proud of you. I will not use one or two persons who have been bought over to drag the police in Rivers state into whatever intra-party crisis that is going on, we are not part of it, we are a neutral body”, he said.

Meantime, Justice H.A. Ngajiwa of a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt yesterday dismissed an application by the Peoples Democratic Party, elected Chairman of Obio Akpor local government area, his Vice and the seventeen councillors of the local government to be joined in a matter earlier filed by the newly Caretaker Committee of the local government seeking the court to ask the Police to vacate the local government secretariat.

The Police sealed the council secretariat on the ground over alleged plot by some hoodlums to unleash terror on the place.
