Delta state has been nominated to host the first National Cycling Championship billed to hold in September this year, according to the Technical Director of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN), Mohammed Bashir.
Bashir who told Saturday Vanguard sports of the development, added that the championship is six-day event for both male and female categories.
“After a long deliberation by the federation, we came to the conclusion that Delta State has been given the hosting right for the very first edition.
Delta, as you know, has been one of the best in terms of performance in the country.
The championship will follow the International Cycling Union, UCI Pattern as all the events approved by UCI will be competed for in the tourney that will span over six days.” he said
The Technical Director stressed that “the cyclists will compete in road race, individual time trial, team time trial and team pursuit. We have sent letters to the chairman of the Delta state sports council intimating him about the tournament.”
In another development the CFN has extended an invitation to Andrea Tonti of the Italian Cycling Federation to visit Abuja on behalf of the UCI to certify the Abuja velodrome.
According to the technical director, the certification exercise of the velodrome is to be conducted from 6- 10 of June, 2013 at the Abuja Velodrome complex.
He stressed that the federation will be responsible for the board/ lodging as well as transportation of Andrea while in the country.
He appealed to the immigration services to grant the Italian Nigerian visa to enable him come for the event.
