Navy hands over 15 Russian crew members to Police


LAGOS — The Nigerian Navy yesterday, handed over the 15-man Russian crew members of MV Myre Seadiver ship, which was arrested  on the nation’s waters for carrying arms four months ago, to the Nigeria Police for further investigation.

Recovered on the Merchant Vessel  marked E5U2529, were  14 AK 47 arms with 3,643 ammunition and  22 Benelli MR1 20 Barrel rifles with 4, 955 ammunitions.

The handover, however, contradicts earlier report accredited to the Russian ministry that the crew members had been released, after a telephone conversation between both countries.

During investigation by the Navy, it was established that the ship was in the Nigerian waters without permission.

reportedly explained that the recovered weapons  were for self defense. But the number of the arms as gathered was more than that supposed to be used for self defense, as the arms were concealed in nine MSG 14 and 18 boxes and the ammunition concealed in nine cookies cans.

“They said they were using them for self protection. The implication of this  is that we must take every  detail , as far as  security of Nigeria is concerned. We will ensure there are no security lapse anywhere”Commodore Njoku said..

Part of  Police  further investigation as gathered, would  include  to ascertain the destination of the vessel in Nigeria and at the end take necessary action.

Asked how long  the investigation would take,  DCP Muazu said it was too early to state, assuring however  that the Police would at the end of the  investigation make their findings known to members of the public.
