LAGOS — FORMER President of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, Thursday, called for a comprehensive welfare scheme for serving and retired judges.
Agbakoba in a letter to National Judicial Council, NJC, Chairperson, Justice Maryam Mukhtar, said it was disturbing that a Justice of the Supreme Court, who served for 46 years would receive “a paltry” monthly salary and would retire without a home or a good pension.
Noting that judges tell the same tales of woes upon retirement, he urged the NJC to begin “a transformational process to address these issues.
“I propose as a first step that housing, medicals, cars, enhanced salaries and allowances are provided in 2013.”
“I urge that a comprehensive welfare scheme must be put in place for judges, both serving and retired.”
