LAGOS — A total of 569 suspected armed robbers have been arrested by the police in Lagos State, between November 2011 and October 2012, while 140 armed robbers died during encounters with the police within the period under review.
In crime statistics, a summary for 2012, the state Commissioner of Police Umar Manko while highlighting the efforts and achievements of the Command at the 6th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security held in Lagos, said 371 arms, 26,058 ammunition were recovered under the same period.
Also, 954 vehicles were recovered, 680 were snatched, 570 were removed from park, while 13 vehicles were driven away by the drivers.
The CP, also said the state recorded 123 armed robbery incidents, while 418 were armed robberies foiled. He stated that a total of 32 policemen were killed during encounters with robbers, while the Command investigated 270 murder cases.
Meantime, the Governor. Babatunde Fashola, yesterday honoured 22 operatives of the State Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, with awards for gallantry and excellent service.
He also presented cheques and posthumous awards to three policemen who were killed or injured during the deadly September 9, 2012 robbery attack in some parts of the state.
Presenting the awards to the SARS operatives, the Governor applauded their efforts to ensure that justice was served on perpetrators of the September 9, deadly robbery attack in the state, which he said, was designed to bring fear of insecurity in the minds of residents of the state.
