By JACOB AJOM
Gbolahan Okuneye was in two finals, but it was Sheikh Amda who stole the limelight at the end of the day. The occasion was the 2nd Arco Petrochemicals Table Tennis Championship held at the Table Tennis section of Ikoyi Club 1938.

In the Veterans final Gbolahan Okuneye played Tony Owolabi, the chairman of the table tennis section. Okuneye took the first two sets, 11/9, 11/6. Just when everybody thought he was coasting home to an easy victory, Owolabi fought back and took the third and fourth sets at 11/5, 10/12.

With scores at 2-2, the fifth set provided all the thrills expected of a closely fought battle. Okuneye won the set 11/3 to carry the day.

The men’s doubles saw the pair of Bola Ayorinde and Seye Oke dismiss the pair of Femi Sokoya and Babatunde Adebanjo 3/1 to earn the crown.

The men’s singles  final saw Honourable Gbolahan Okuneye making his second  appearance on the night. Buoyed by his victory over Owolabi in the veterans singles, Okuneye was hopeful, he would take home two titles. Amda won the contest 4-2 to win the title.

Representative of the sponsors, Julie Okoigun expressed satisfaction with the standard of the competition, saying, “It has been wonderful and very encouraging to see that Nigerians still engage in recreational activities.

For us, as a company we are encouraged that we make Nigerians to live a healthy lifestyle. And that is our joy.”

She said Arco had a long romance with sports and it would be wrong of anybody to say the company was limiting its effort to the table tennis tournament. “We have sponsored other youth football and tennis tournaments in the past.
