Constitution review: Constituency calls for true federalism, others

LAGOS — Residents of Lagos have expressed the need to have a constitution that would allow for the practice of true federalism as well as provide for local governments autonomy in the country.

Also, House of Representatives’ Deputy Chairman on Finance,Otunba Yomi Ogunnusi, representing Ifako-Ijaiye Federal Constituency, at the weekend, assured citizens that the proposed review of the nation’s constitution would lay to rest all the problems currently confronting Nigeria as a country.

On the call for true federalism, the residents made the submission at the African Model College, Ogba, in Ifako-Ijaiye Federal constituency, venue of the public hearing on constitution review held across various constituencies in the federation

Most of the participants  at the hearing, expressed the dire need for constitution review to address the grey areas that are outdated and considered dragging the country backward in the Nigeria project.

A resident, simply identified as Mr. Jimoh Ajao, in his contribution, noted that the local governments were poorly funded due to the faulty practice of federal system of government.

Addressing the large crowd at the hearing, Hon. Ogunnusi said the review would address issue of state creation, revenue sharing formula, creation of state police, and other issues of national importance that will determine the nation’s posterity and unity in future.
