Tribunal refuses Airhiavbere’s request to call more witnesses

BENIN—Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City, yesterday, rejected the request by the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the July 14 governorship election, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, to be allowed to file more witnesses and statements in his petition against the declaration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole as winner of the election.

The tribunal, meanwhile adjourned till October 23, for the commencement of hearing in the only surviving paragraphs in the petition, which deals with the issue of electoral irregularities.

The tribunal said it was unable to grant the request for more statements from witnesses as requested because that paragraph of the petition had to do with the issue of qualification of Governor Oshiomhole, which the tribunal struck out on September 27, 2012.

The tribunal urged Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure that the voters register was made available to counsel to the petitioner as requested to ensure uninterrupted hearing on the matter from October 23.
