Rep wants EFCC to probe N3.3bn Edo road contract

BY Gabriel Enogholase

BENIN—HOUSE of Representatives Minority Whip, Mr. Samson Osagie, has called on Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to urgently investigate the circumstances that led to the award of Oben-Umoghun-Nokhua Road project in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State to a construction company, Askay Constuction Company Limited.

Osagie, who represents Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode in the National Assembly, made the call, weekend, at Umogun Nokhua shortly after inspecting the road project. He expressed dissatisfaction with the poor quality of works so far executed by the company.

The Umughun-Nokhua-Oben Road project was awarded in November 2009 by Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to Askay Construction Company.

Osagie said: “The people of this community, Obe, Omoghun Nokhua in Orhiomwon council, who are to benefit from this project had been surchanged.

“The cost of the project is N3.38 billion. From my record and investigation, over N800 million had been paid and from what we have seen on ground, the job done cannot justify what had been paid.”

He said the initial crisis notwithstanding, there was no justification for the company not to have laid asphalt on any of part of the 22-kilometer road after three years.

In my pinion, I am unable to accept the argument that the whether condition had been largely responsible for the delay in this project.

“This is one case of a project awarded to a contractor, who lacks capacity in terms of men and machinery to execute the project.

“As the mouth piece of the locality, I think this is a proper case for the anti-corruption agency to look into. I cannot watch my people continue to be surcharged by an unscrupulous contractor, who indeed has no capacity; it is a clear case lack of capacity.”
