‘Lagoon State won’t depend on federal allocation when created’


As the clamour for the creation of Lagoon State intensifies, Lagoon Sate Movement, yesterday, said the state when created, would survive without the monthly allocation from the Federal Government.

Meantime, clerics have vowed to embark on different prayer session to ensure that the state is approved by the National Assembly.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the Chairman of the Movement, Chief Babatunde Benson who made the remark at the Ikorodu Town Hall, Ikorodu, said that the proposed state currently generates over N6 billion monthly Intern- ally Generated Revenue, IGR,of Lagos State.

According to him: “The proposed state currently accounts for over 12 per cent of the country’s industrial output. And it also accounts for over five per cent of all bank branches in the country which could be used as a measure of commercial and industrial activity in Nigeria.”

Benson emphasized that all these would increase when the state is finally granted its autonomy, adding “there are abundant resources yet to tap within the proposed state.”

Speaking on behalf of clerics at the event, Chief Imam of Ikorodu Central Mosque, Alhaji Yahya Olorunoshebi said that the clerics will not rest on their oars until the state is approved.
