2015 Presidency: ACF flays squabbles among northern leaders

Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has expressed concern over what it described as ‘’public altercations’’  or squabbles among northern leaders as efforts were being made to ensure unity in the region as a way of winning the 2015 presidency.

ACF, which had earlier called for reconciliation in the north, said that public altercations among the leaders were unhelpful “because they are capable of conveying the wrong impression that the North cannot work hard and bring back peace and security.”

Reacting to the exchange of words by the Chairman of ACF Board of Trustees, BOT, Gen. Jerry Useni and Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, as well as media concern over the issue, the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani  said: “The common mantra in all the questions is the concern on how ACF hopes to ensure that the resolution of the Arewa Conference on Peace and Unity, as summarised in the road map for socio-economic and political development of the North, seems to pass a vote of no confidence on those to help implement it.

More troubling is the fact that Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has berated the BOT chair publicly, thereby sign posting internal division before the road map goes out. I have read the statements credited to Gen Useni on Vice President Namadi Sambo, Northern governors, Northern Leaders Political Forum, NLPF, and about Middle Belt as they concern the struggle to bring about peace and unity in the North.

I have also read the reactions by Alhaji Tanko Yakasai to that of the General, and so understand the concern for clarifications.”

Sani, however, faulted those who believe that the north presently lacked cohesion because of poor leadership, pointing out that “such a school of thought believes in a strong man theory of leadership that can provide order and direction to a dysfunctional North.”

According to him, the creation of states had weakened the cohesion and unity of the north like other old regions.

“That is why all the regions hanker for redox of Awolowo,Sardauna and Zik to no avail. Even countries like Thailand, Malaysia,Indonesia and Singapore where strong men with force of personality held sway are about to write requiem of same in favour of collective leadership,” Sani added.
