ADO-EKITI – Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Adewale Omirin, has dispelled the rumour making the rounds that the Regional Integration being pursued by governors in the South-Western Region was aimed at pulling out of the country, adding that the nation can get the best constitution through the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference, SNC.
The Speaker, who said the National Assembly was constitutionally-empowered to amend the constitution, argued that only the SNC could write a new constitution.
Omirin, also the Vice-Chairman, Conference of Speakers, South-West Zone, noted that the present constitution was the product of the military which has some grey areas that must be tackled once and for all.
To ensure the success of the regional integration, Omirin said lawmakers in the region , would soon convoke a Southwest Parliamentary Conference to fashion a legal framework for sustainability of the programme.
The speaker pointed out that the Southwest economic Agenda was an attempt to put the zone on the fast lane of economic development as witnessed under the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and expand the frontiers of socio-economic and political interactions of the States in the geopolitical zone.
