LAGOS—A three-man robbery gang which attempted to rob occupants of a building in Aibu Street, off Bode Thomas Street, Surulere, Lagos, engaged a team of policemen in a gun duel , in its bid to escape.
However, at the end of the shoot-out, the suspects were all arrested.
Report said the armed men stormed the building at 9 a.m, but a team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer, Bode Thomas, after a distress call, stormed the compound.
On sighting the policemen, the robbers, opened fire. But one of them, said to have been hit by a bullet from the policemen, was arrested while his colleagues jumped through the fence.
The fleeing robbers, according to reports, jumped into one of the buildings in the street, where they accosted the occupants and stripped them of their clothes which they changed into, to disguise themselves.
Eyewitnesses said they thereafter strolled out of the building, with the occupants locked up in a room. But unknown to them, policemen had condoned off the area.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said they were arrested by the policemen .
“A gun with live cartridges, including some expended ones were recovered from them,” she said.
The identities of the robbers, said to have been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, were given as Dare Johnson, 22 years; Lukeman Bioku, 22, and Lekan Jamiu, 24.
About five hours later, attempt by another robbery gang to snatch a Toyota Rav 4 Sports Utility Van from its owner in Adisa Basua Street,Alhaji Masha area of Surulere, was also reportedly foiled by policemen attached to the Bode Thomas division.
The black vehicle with number-plate NT 427 KJA, according to Braide, was taken to the division.
