The taskforce of Ladipo Market has seized a total of 25,000 substandard tyres in a renewed enforcement to rid the market of the banned product.
The President General of the market, Mr. Ikechukwu Aimalu, disclosed this yesterday at a media briefing by the Ladipo Auto Central Executive Committee,LACEC,on the state of the market.
Aimalu stated that the mop up exercise was part of measure to ensure 100 percent compliance with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria,SON, zero tolerance on used tyres in Nigeria as well as national interest.
On July 19th, 2012, the enforcement team of SON, led by one Odumosu, stormed. Ladipo Market in Mushin to enforce the Federal Government directive on zero tolerance on used tyres in the country but the market leaders appealed to the team for more cordial approach in solving the menace.
Following the appeal the SON on August 1st, 2012 staged an enlightenment campaign in Ladipo to sensitize traders and general public on the dangers of used tyres. The SON described used tyres as killers just like HIV/AID syndrome.
According to . Aimalu: “In the light of the awareness campaign, LAC EC converged, discussed and resolved to ensure 100 compliance with the SON’s directive.
”Above all, LACEC therefore, appealed to Federal government to continue with the awareness campaign against substandard tyres in order to cultivate in Nigeria culture of rejecting substandard products and ensure that consignment at the sea ports are properly checked before leaving the portsm.
”Also, the Odumosu led SON should embrace civil means in combating the menace rather than employin military and legal mactinations to achieve such.”
