Ex-Super Eagle loses N100m property to Ibadan fire disaster

IBADAN—AN early morning inferno that gutted the parking lot of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company on Moshood Abiola Ring Road, Ibadan, yesterday, burnt no fewer than 11 vehicles believed to be owned by staff of the company.

Also affected in the fire was a former international footballer and ex-Super Eagle, Gbenga Okunowo, who said he lost over N100 million worth of property to the fire that started about  2.30 a.m.

Other property destroyed by the fire included a church, canteen, a carpentry workshop and other household items.
The ex-football star told newsmen  that he was  in his wife’s room when the fire started.

He narrated that he saw the fire burning part of the roof of a building behind the Capital Building and later extended to another  duplex  by the electricity company.

Owing to the intensity of the fire, they were not able to retrieve  any item from it. Though, the immediate cause of the incident was not known,  Vanguard gathered that the fire started from the car park of the company.

A resident, Agboola Davies explained that the inferno started from the  parking space of the electricity company between 1.30 a.m. and 2.30 a.m.

He lamented that the fire service men came with insufficient water and that  before they could have their tanker refilled, the fire had wrecked more havoc.

When Vanguard called the spokesperson for the company, Mr. Jide Oyenuga, his phone was not picked.
