Nigerian athletics officials are sulking for participating in the IAAF World Junior Championships that ended in Barcelona, Spain yesterday.

This was after the team failed to win a single medal in the Championships, despite the spirited attempt made by the athletes. Besides, the federation is now saddled with the responsibility of shouldering expenses incurred after last minute cancellation of flights,  as a result of the team’s inability to travel on schedule.

“Maybe we shouldn’t have come after all that trouble of securing visa. This is because our team’s performances were affected and also we have been left with a debt burden,” said AFN president Solomon Ogba.

“What is even more painful is the effort of the athletes who have been in camp since April. They were hopeful of putting in their best, but this was not to be,” added the AFN boss.

He submitted that the trip cost the federation  N10m and the National Sports Commission have told the AFN to make up for the balance as they were not in a position to do so.

Nigeria was two days late into the championships, after the athletes were delayed in Lagos by Spanish Embassy officials. This made the depleted team to miss their strong hold events. Nigeria was not represented in the 4x400m after key members of the quartet were denied visas.

However the women 4x100m team fought their way into the final, Only to be disqualified after running a good race.
