UNILAG renaming after Abiola: Tella chides critics

A close associate of the late Bashorun M.K.O Abiola, the winner of June 12,1993 presidential election, Alhaji Liad Tella, has chided critics of renaming UNILAG after the late politician, saying those who stepped on his blood to achieve fame, wealth and affluence were against him.

Speaking in an interview with journalists in Ilorin, the veteran journalist said this revelation became necessary because it would be criminal for those of them who know to keep silent.

He cited the beneficiaries of the supreme sacrifice paid by the late politician as former and serving governors, senators, members of House of Representatives, among others, and further accused them of gross failure to empower the family of the late politician.

According to him, “what have they done to empower the families of Abiola?  Will they eat the street protest? Jamiu was made a member of Pilgrims Welfare Board, what is that? Have they taken statistics of the Abiola family? One day, all of us will die”.

A former editor of the rested Concord Newspapers, Tella said the renaming of UNILAG after the late politician is just the beginning of the recognition of his invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.

According to him, the renaming of UNILAG after Abiola is deserving. He added that the decision meant that the late politiciam did not die in vain.

”Tokenism or not, Federal Government’s recognition is a beginning of the beginning. The pain in our hearts can’t be shared by anyone else, except members of his immediate family”, he stressed.
