THE four police com mands under Zone 9, Umuahia Abia state, said they have within the last two weeks, arrested 33 suspected armed robbers, 33 kidnappers and 12 cultists, who are presently in their custody in the various state commands. Zone 9 is comprised of Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo States Police Commands.
This was disclosed when new Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), in charge of the Zone, Mr. Solomon Olusegun, met with the police commissioners in the zone and other senior police officers, Thursday in Umuahia.
The zone noted that criminal activities had witnessed a significant decline in the four states.
State by state statistics of the arrests showed that Anambra state command with 30 arrested kidnappers top the list. The command also killed three kidnappers. Enugu state command arrested three suspected kidnappers.
Abia state command said it arrested 33 suspected armed robbers with four of them killed, while Enugu nabbed nine armed robbery suspects and Anambra arrested six and killed three armed robbery suspects in shootout.
The zone noted also that the war against students’ cultism also yielded good results as 40 cultists were arrested within the period. Out of this number, Enugu had the highest number of 18 arrested cultists while Abia and Anambra recorded six each.
According to the Abia Police commissioner, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, the arrested cultists were students of Abia State University who were nabbed at Aba during an initiation ceremony.
In his situation report, the Anambra police commissioner, Mr. Bala Nassarawa said that armed robbers have gone beyond stealing only properties of victims as they also stole a four month old baby when they attacked a family at Ozubulu, in Nnewi South Local Government Area.
