Osun govt, civil society groups mark June 12


OSOGBO – Osun State Government, Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People, CDRP led by Amitolu Shittu and Osun State Civil Societies Coalition Tuesday in Osogbo organised a series of lecture to commemorate the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by Chief MKO Abiola.

Lecturers at the different fora include, constitutional lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana; former NADECO Secretary, Mr. Ayo Opadokun, OAU, Ile-Ife ASUU Chairman Dr. Ife Adewumi and Dr. Olowogboyega Oyebade.

Speaking at one of the occasions, Governor Rauf Aregbesola disclosed that the state government has declared June 12 every year as MKO Abiola Day adding that a bill will soon be sent to the State House of Assembly in order to back the declaration with the force of law.

The Governor said declaring the day as MKO Abiola Day amount to a nominal gift in honour of a man who offered his money, name and subsequently paid the supreme price so that we could have democracy now being enjoyed.
