Umuahia – A German-based Nigerian Physician and Nuclear Technology Consultant, Dr Onuoha Onyeukwu, on Thursday called on past leaders and the present administration to work together in order to find a lasting solution to the security challenges facing the country.
Onyeukwu, who is on vacation, made the call while briefing newsmen in Umuahia on the current security challenges facing the country.
Onyeukwu, 75, is one of the few Nigerians that had retained a single Nigerian citizenship for more than 40 years that he had lived in Germany.
He said that some of the ‘unpatriotic comments’ from past leaders against the government was capable of derailing the process of democratisation in the country.
“To me, it is shocking that some of the people that once held the affairs of this country are criticising the present situation in Nigeria.
“It is a sincere pity that such a thing is going on in my country and this is a bad example for the youths.
“My appeal is that Nigerians should give the present leadership the needed assistance instead of demoralising the leaders,” he said.
He called for understanding among the ethnic groups that make up the country, noting that Nigeria would be better if it remained as one entity.
“As an Igboman, I had interest for Biafra, but as time went on, I realised that it was a mistake and as a result our experience has shown that it will be impossible for anybody to disintegrate the nation.”
He called on Nigerians to stand against all forms of divisive tendencies, saying “we should learn from our past.” (NAN)
