EURO 2012:Germany sent Orange Boys home as Varela fires Portugal to victory

By Ime Bassey

Two first half goals from Mario Gumez sent the Netherlands home in the first rounds of the ongoing Euro 2012 championship, even as substitute Silvestre Varela gave Portugal the needed victory against Denmark.

Gumez got on the scorers sheet in the 24th minute after a one-two from Thomas Muller before firing a low shot into the bottom left corner of the Dutch post.

He made it two in the 38th minute with beautiful shot on the edge of the Dutch eighteen yard given the Germans a deserved two goal lead despite a late 73rd minute goal from Robin Van Persie.

The defeat meant the Netherland seat bottom on the Group B with no point while Joachim Löw led German machine seat tops of the log with six points.

Germany plays Denmark in the Groups’ last game while Netherlands plays Portugal who needs the three points to move onto the quarter final.

Meanwhile, it took a dramatic 87th-minute winner by substitute Silvestre Varela to give Portugal the needed victory against Denmark today in a pulsating match on a day Christiano Ronaldo fired blank.

Portugal had thrown away a two-goal lead when Danish maskman, Nicklas Bendtner headed home a brace from a close-range to restore parity in the 80th minute but only lasted for seven minute before Varela gave the Portuguese hope.
