Delta Speaker forecloses plan to extend tenure

BY Emma Amaize

WARRI – SPEAKER of Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Ochei, weekend, said he had no plan to rework the House Rules on impeachment  in a bid  to extend his tenure.

He spoke to Vanguard, against the background of allegation that there was an impeachment plot against him because of his underground plot, saying  he  knew those spreading the unfounded rumour.

He said: “You can speak to members of the House to get the true picture of things. I cannot be part of anything that is unconstitutional.”

A source close to the House had alleged that the impeachment plot was thickening against the Speaker because of his secret meeting with nine members of the House after plenary was adjourned to June 27, last week, to amend the impeachment procedure, which stipulated 2/3 simple majority to the effect that members must serve a two-week notice in writing on the erring officer about his offences for him/her to respond.

But the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Monday Igbuya, supported Ochie’s position, saying “I can tell you authoritatively that Mr. Speaker has no plan to change the House Rules to make his removal from office difficult as you have been erroneously told. It is not correct and there is also no plot by members to impeach him.”

“What I can tell you is that our rules are being modified. For those who are peddling the allegation that  Ochei  wants to change the rules to make impeachment of the Speaker difficult, is he going to remain perpetually as  Speaker of this House, when he leaves office, what happens, are  the rules going to be changed again.  As I told you, it is not true.”
